What made you want to become a Doctor and how did you choose to become a Surgeon?
The decision to become a Doctor was influenced by my Dad; he is an ObGyn. At the age of 10, I decided that was what I wanted to be after seeing his great love for Medicine and for his patients. Becoming a Surgeon happened later on after I finished Med School. I had a great opportunity to do my internship to get my DR medical license at a Heart Surgery Center. I became a surgical assistant and ended up in Love with surgery of all types. But of all the surgeries I got to assist on, Plastic Surgery was one of my favorites. Seeing the process of transforming a patient, with all the joy and happiness around it made it very special. I thank God he gave me the skills and that I discovered them at the early age of 22.
Where did you do most of your studies and how long you been practicing?
I did my Medicine (5 years) and Surgical (4 years) training here in the Dominican Republic. Then I went to Guadalajara Mexico and did my Plastic Surgery Training (2010-2013). I have been practicing since 2013.
How challenging is it for you to balance life and work?
Surgery is my Passion so it is hard for me to consider it as work. I have a perfect balance feeling my life is around surgery but at the same time I invest time on the weekends to relax, play golf, and share time with my family which is very close and large.
Do you have your own practice?
I have my private practice performing mostly aesthetic procedures and some reconstructive with breast cancer reconstruction. Also public practice at a Children Hospital performing reconstructive procedures for children with congenital and facial deformities such as cleft lip, palate; burns, and hand surgery.
In your experience, what are some of the most consistent misconceptions you hear from patients about getting cosmetic surgery?
The idea of getting everything done all at once and also when they say they don`t want to have any fat at all! Patients sometimes don`t understand their risk of being too aggressive and how some fat is necessary to avoid complications. It is not about how much fat you remove it is about how much fat you leave.
Do you have a favorite procedure that you feel is your best?
I feel Vaser Liposuction is my best. It is just natural for me to deliver amazing results.
What have you found to be the most challenging in your work and why?
Breast lift, because they are always different size and shape but patients want them completely identical and symmetrical. That`s why I take my time doing it, I focus on the perfect position and shape of the nipples.
How do you keep yourself up to date with technology and industry advancements?
As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, we have the benefit of getting the most active plastic surgery journal the “PRS”, I periodically see many online webinars with trending technologies and I also keep myself updated by participating in international aesthetic meetings.
How do you as a physician ensure the safety of patients traveling from overseas to have surgery?
We run over 13 blood tests, X-rays, cardiologist evaluations with EKG, and if needed lung and endocrine evaluations. I advise them to stay at least 14 days post-op and after they leave we keep constant communication.
What would you like to tell prospective patients about yourself that they may not know?
Performing liposuction is a very demanding physical exercise which is why I train at the gym 3-4 times a week very early before I get into surgery.
